Top tips to spring clean your PR

If your communications activity is gathering dust and the results are going a bit mouldy, then perhaps it’s time to call in the experts to give your PR a spring clean and make it sparkle.

It’s the perfect time of year for your communications activity to blossom, just as nature is doing so outdoors.

Take a mop to your media list

Get a bucket to hand and prepare to mop up all the dirty habits that are stopping your PR activity from making a splash.

This should include purging and updating your existing media lists to ensure that your press releases are reaching the correct, and relevant, news contacts.

Take the time to conduct research to identify individuals rather than sending to generic email addresses where possible.

As an experienced PR agency, we have strong, and close, working relationships with many of the most influential, and respected, journalists across various sectors, both B2B and B2C.

And the figures speak for themselves. In 2023, we achieved a massive 4,356 media hits for our veterinary PR clients alone, including BBC coverage.

Vacuum your brand messaging

Plug in a vacuum cleaner and suck up any inconsistences in the messages that you’re sending that portray your brand.

Best of all, keep your messaging clear, concise and distinctive… and be sure to aspire to your own brand values.

Whatever it is, choose the tone of voice that best represents who you are as a brand and that appeals to your target audience.

If any of your messaging needs further explanation to understand it, then it’s probably wise to throw it out with the trash.

Don’t let the dust settle on your PR activity

Dust settles but don’t let the dust settle on your marketing and PR activities.

As part of your PR spring clean, consider new tactics to keep ahead in a constantly shifting landscape and entertain the idea of employing experts in their field to achieve your goals.

For example, search engine optimisation (SEO) is of ever-increasing importance to stay ahead of competitors and is increasingly being incorporated into PR. Get it wrong, or don’t do enough of it, and it will leave your website lagging behind and online presence in the waste basket.

Among factors to consider are improving keywords to increase organic visibility, building backlinks, creating relevant content… and that’s just for starters.

If you need advice, then ask for professional help.
