Check out our weekly roundup of the latest PR, Social and SEO updates that happened Monday 6th May – Sunday 12th May
SEO
Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, has said that “search experience would evolve substantively in the next 10 years,” and indicated backlinks will continue to be an essential part of search results for Google.
Pichai was recently asked about ‘SEO spam,’ and here’s what he had to say:
“Any time there’s a transition, you get an explosion of new content, and AI is going to do that. So, for us, we view this as the challenge, and I actually think there’ll be people who will struggle to do that, right? So doing that well is what will define a high-quality product, and I think it’s gonna be the heart of what makes Search successful.”
On AI-Generated content ruining Search, he added: “The challenge for everyone, and the opportunity, is how do you have a notion of what’s objective and real in a world where there’s gonna be a lot of synthetic content? I think it’s part of what will define Search in the next decade ahead, right?
“People often come to Google right away to see whether something they saw somewhere else actually happened. It’s a common pattern we see. We are making progress, but it’s gonna be an ongoing journey.”
Social Media
It was a quiet week for social media updates! We’ve had lots of updates over the past month, so be sure to read our previous weekly social media updates.
threads
If you happen to be using Threads, you’ll be pleased to know that they have added a ‘view count’ on posts, so now you’ll know how many people see your posts.
bluesky
This might be a platform that you’re unfamiliar with, or have heard of it but don’t know much about it.
Ex Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey was on the board of directors for a “decentralised” social media project called Bluesky.
However, he has just announced his departure from the project. Interestingly, he said Bluesky was “repeating all the mistakes” he made over at Twitter.
Youtube
YouTube has released a blog on how it’s supporting the 2024 European Parliamentary elections, with plenty of new features coming to the platform. This is especially interesting timing when you consider the EU has launched a formal investigation into Meta over disinformation on Facebook and Instagram, and the USA is potentially banning TikTok.
It seems to us that Google/YouTube are seeking to show they’re on the EU’s ‘side’ and highlighting they’re a transparent, ‘honest’ platform.
